In the heart of Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands sits Champion Lakes golf club. The brain child of major league baseball players Dick Groat and Jerry Lynch. In 1963 the pair started on a two and a half year search for the perfect property on which they could build their dream golf course.
The property had to have just the right amount of water, woods and of course stunning mountain views. In 1966 Groat and Lynch found it. Just 6 miles from historic Ligonier PA, and only 45 miles from Pittsburgh, “The Perfect Property”. Immediately, the best friends began the design and construction of Champion Lakes Golf Club.
Open to the public, Champion Lakes today features 18 championship holes of golf with bent grass greens, tees, and fairways. Its multiple tee locations provide a fun and yet challenging experience for golfers of all skill levels.
The biggest challenge at Champion Lakes may be to stay focused on golf. If the fantastic views of the Laurel Mountains and The Chestnut Ridge don’t get you, the trip through picturesque groves of native hardwood trees will. Golfers at Champion Lakes truly are one with nature.
But don’t be fooled, golf at Champion Lakes can be very serious. Champion Lakes has hosted numerous Western Pennsylvania Golf Association and U.S.G.A events. Champion Lakes has also been awarded a rare 4-star rating by Golf Digest’s “Places to Play” guide, as well as a “Best in State” rating in Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 places You Can Play” list.
While golf is king, Champion Lakes offers so much more; including overnight on site accommodations, full service dining, patio dining, banquet facilities, wedding accommodations, golf packages, and the soon to be world famous Groat’s Grill.
