North American Premiere: Ethel Smyth’s The Prison

April 7 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Ethel Smyth is one of the most important female composers of the modern era–for 113 years, she was the only woman to have a full opera performed at the Met until last year, with Kaija Saariaho was performed–and her works have been featured on festivals and performances around the world.

But as far as we know, until this year, The Prison, for soloists, chorus and orchestra, one of the last works she composed, had never been performed in North America.

We are thrilled to be bringing the honor of this first orchestral performance in the U.S. to Johnstown.

This work features the voice of the Prisoner and his Soul, and so we pair the piece with Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, to prepare us for Smyth’s unique sound world, and Beethoven’s Overture to Fidelio, as that opera closely reflects the themes of Smyth’s undiscovered masterpiece.
